Developing and Promoting the use of SFEDI Business Enterprise Standards

June 2007 – April 2008        Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI)

Our research was used to inform the development of additional business enterprise standards in areas such as family business, work-life balance, home working, informal finance and international trade and identify good practice in learning and development support for people starting and running small businesses. As well as a review of existing literature and consultation with SFEDI fora the work included twenty focus groups and forty-eight individual interviews.

Collation of existing job descriptions from business support organisations, three focus groups, ten in-depth interviews and meetings with assessment and awarding organisations were used to provide the evidence from which standards were developed for staff providing information services to businesses.

Evaluation of the Six Squared Learning Sets

The Learning Sets were a collective self-development programme for business owners run by the School of Management at the University of Sheffield involving group meetings for action planning and reflection and co-mentoring arrangements. Stratagia provided an independent evaluation of two cohorts based on in-depth telephone interviews with participants.
